Why is Laser Hair Removal an effective treatment?
Permanent hair removal lasers utilize light at a particular wavelength which is absorbed by the pigment within the hair. The light energy used is selective energy. It is only absorbed by its target melanin bypassing all other tissues and leaving the skin virtually unaffected. This light energy converts to heat energy which completely disables the hair follicle and germanating cells.

Why is Laser Hair Removal a safe treatment?
During the laser hair removal treatment the skin is protected by patented cooling systems. Our New Mini GentleLASE Plus laser uses a Dynamic Cooling Device in which cryogen is sprayed onto the skin which cools the upper layers of the skin so that they do not heat up during the treatment. The Dynamic Cooling Device also decreases the risk of laser hair removal side effects and provides patients with increased comfort.

Who is a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Since light energy is absorbed by the skin and the hair pigment (called melanin), those individuals with the darkest hair color and/or the greatest contrast between their skin and hair will have the most effective treatment with the least amount of laser hair removal side effects. In people with darker skin color (more melanin), the skin competes with the hair for absorption of laser energy resulting in potential damage to the skin, not the hair. People with light colored hair (blonde, gray, red and white) have little to no melanin and, therefore, do not respond to laser hair removal treatments. For those with a mix of dark and light hair, we suggest a combination of laser hair removal and electrolysis treatments to effectively treat all of the unwanted hair. We find the two methods work well together to bring about a quicker permanent result for these clients.

Are there any side effects to Laser Hair Removal?
The pulse sensation of a laser hair removal treatment is most often compared to the snap of a rubberband on the skin. The mild discomfort involved dissipates very quickly. All painful sensation is generally gone within 10 minutes. For very sensitive patients, we recommend an over-the-counter topical anesthetic cream. After the treatment there typically is some redness or swelling on the affected area which lasts from a couple of hours to a couple of days. Occasionally crusting or pigment change (temporary) can occur, and very rarely, blistering, infection or scarring can develop. It is important to know that the darker the skin, the higher the risk. We suggest a free inconspicuous test spot when there is any doubt.

What parts of the body can be treated with a Hair Removal Laser?
All body hair, on both men and women, can be treated with a Hair Removal Laser. The list of areas includes backs, legs, arms, underarms, hands, feet, full bikini lines, nose hair, ears, and all facial hair. Most treatments can be completed in about 15 minutes. Legs and full backs and other large areas may require an hour or more. We find that typically 3 to 6 treatments spaced about 8-12 weeks apart are required to completely remove the body area of unwanted hair. This length of time may vary from person to person depending upon any hair growth stimulus there may be, color of hair to be treated, color of skin in the area to be treated, medical condition, as well as other contributing factors. Do you offer laser or IPL photo skin rejuvenation treatments?
New Freedom Laser offers photo skin and facial rejuvenation treatments in its Portsmouth/Kittery and Portland, Maine clinics. Our advanced Candela Ellipse IPL system is an intense pulsed light system, not a laser system. A laser uses one band on a wavelength to treat a skin condition such as hair removal, age spots/brown spots, wrinkles or spider veins. An intense pulsed light system, also referred to as photo skin rejuvenation, uses a broad array of bands on a wavelength. The resulting difference is that intense pulsed light covers a wider area of skin (face, chest, back, etc.) and therefore treats a wider array of skin conditinos at the same time.

One of the many benefits of photo skin rejuvenation is that it tightens facial skin to give you a more youthful look - almost like a non-surgical facelift, as many of our clients remark. One of our clients was so amazed at the results that she commented "Even my husband noticed!".
