Mexitan Tropical Sands SPF 15 Suncreen

It’s important to spread the word about the risks of using dangerous chemicals in our daily lives. Recent reports have indicated that children are developing cancer at an alarming rate, and it has been linked to the application of chemical sunscreens and DEET bug repellents, beginning at an early age. It only takes seconds from the time you apply chemical-laden products on your skin for it to absorb into your body and reach your vital organs.

Chemicals used in other name-brand products are not only toxic to our bodies, but they enter the environment and are harmful to coral reefs and other living organisms. Many nature parks and snorkeling locations require use of sunscreen that says “Biodegradable” right on the label. Mexitan’s Tropical Sands® unique patented formulas provide broad-spectrum protection and a superior alternative to popular brands.

Mexitan’s unique all-natural products and Tropical Sands® branded sun care items have a growing appeal to health-conscious families who realize the possible dangers of using traditional personal-care items that are loaded with chemicals.

Sun Protection Products and SPF

We’re fortunate to have so many outdoor activities available to our area to help us enjoy the summer but before you grab your sunglasses and head outside, don’t forget to protect your skin.

If you go to the drug store or supermarket you need to be prepared to face the wall of sun protection products and SPF’s that are available. How can you decide which one is best?

What are UV rays?

The sun gives off two kinds of rays: UVA and UVB rays. Dermatologists believe these rays cause wrinkles, tissue damage and skin cancer.

UVB rays affect the top layers of the skin and are responsible for sun burn.

UVA rays affect the lower layers of the skin and are considered responsible for aging. UV rays can penetrate through almost anything (even glass!), so protection is important throughout the year, not just during the summer. You can be exposed to the sun’s harmful rays in any temperature and even on a cloudy day. UV rays also reflect off surfaces such as water, pavement, sand, and snow. The sun is at its strongest between the hours of 10am and 4pm and this is when sun protection is strongly advised.

Active ingredients in sun protection products are what prevent UV rays from harming your skin. There are two types of ingredients you will find in sun protection, chemical and physical blockers. But not all ingredients are safe to slather on your delicate skin. Many people are sensitive to chemical sunscreens and even have allergic reactions. New research looking into the link between the rise in skin cancer and the use of chemical sunscreens is even more troubling. (However, the studies themselves are unclear as to whether the products themselves are the culprit of the extended period of time exposed to the sun while wearing sunscreen may be what leads to higher rates of cancer.)

Sun Block Ingredients

  • Oxybenzone (considered a hormone disruptor)
  • Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA)
  • Benzophenones
  • Cinnamates
  • Salicylates
  • Dibenzoylmethanes
  • Octocrylene
  • Avobenzone
  • Mineral Oil
  • Petroleum
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, etc.)

More and more it seems that the safer alternatives are natural mineral sun blocks that contain reflective blocking ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and do not irritate the skin.

Start out with the most natural sun protection – hat, sunglasses, and a long-sleeved shirt. Keep out of the sun during peak hours and take care of your skin if you do get burned.
